Gallery @ Spring

“This year marks the 80th anniversary of LIFE and we’re delighted to share a glimpse of our archives with Spring Studios. To see the fashion photography of Gordon Parks, Nina Leen and Gjon Mili presented together at this scale is unprecedented”

New York has always been known as one of the fashion capitals of the world, where the latest styles walk the streets of the city. From the 1940s onwards, the city began to define trends and fashions, and it was illustrated magazines such as LIFE that exported these fashions beyond the city boundaries. As LIFE magazine marks its 80th year, part of its iconic archive is going on display at Spring Studios in TriBeCa.

We want to celebrate fashion in New York, especially from the time when New York started to set the pace for international fashion, through the images of a New York institution such as LIFE magazine,” says Eleonora Flammini, the Director of Silverlake Photography, the team curating the exhibition with Javier Sirvent.

Some of LIFE’s most iconic photographers have used the city as a backdrop to document the changing trends, with the exhibition focusing on the 1940s till the 1970s. Including three of the original four staff photographers – Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt and Peter Stockpile – it is an unprecedented look at fashion in the LIFE archive.

“The camera is superior to the eye, and the photograph can, and ideally should, portray the world more  graphic than reality itself.”
